Curriculum

Rank advancement at Traditional Shaolin consists of the following:

 

All of the categories below are not based upon one day’s performance. This will be viewed daily and taken as an average.

 

Stances - Stances should be performed to the best of the student’s ability unless otherwise noted.

Power - Power is generated when proper technique has been executed.

Flexibility - Flexibility is needed to perform the Shaolin material.

Material Known - This includes knowing proper technique, application, and theory.

Sparring - Abilities are judged according to precision, control, power, technique, and use of forms.

Class Experience - This is a judgment according to how often the student is in the classroom.

Overall Performance - Instructor’s discretion will be used to make an assessment.

Overall Attitude - The student should carry a positive attitude towards learning, exercising, and bettering themselves in all areas. 

 

Criteria in order:

1) The above criteria met.

2) Pre-Test of material.

3) Test with one of the Masters. Sashes and certificates will be awarded at this time.

 

*Students going to black sash will be performing ALL material in front of a Master at the test. All fees must be paid in order to be eligible for testing. This includes, but is not limited to class fees and testing fees.

 

To test to brown sash you will have had successfully completed the following:
1-10 Sparring Techniques, 1-10 One Step Pair Fight, 1-10 One Step Method Techniques, Four Doors Collapse Continuously, Flying Tiger Comes Out of Cave, Roc Stretches Its Wings, Lo Han Fist, First Level Staff Techniques, Stick of the Northern Beggar.

 

Curriculum for 3rd Brown to 1st Black:
You must test on 5 forms. Testing is every eight months.

Order may vary from one period to the next. Each period will consist of the four core pieces plus one optional (this will depend on the group being taught).

1) White Crane
2) Shaolin Bird
3) Tiger or Tiger family form
4) Weapon
5) Optional Form

***Please note*** These translations are from the oldest Chinese characters given by Grandmaster Sin The’. The project of translating all material taught is under construction. If you have any Chinese from him prior to the mid 1980’s or seminar sheets I would greatly appreciate a scanned copy.
