Rank advancement at Traditional Shaolin consists of the following:
All of the categories below are not based upon one day’s performance. This will be viewed daily and taken as an average.
Stances - Stances should be performed to the best of the student’s ability unless otherwise noted. Power - Power is generated when proper technique has been executed. Flexibility - Flexibility is needed to perform the Shaolin material. Material Known - This includes knowing proper technique, application, and theory. Sparring - Abilities are judged according to precision, control, power, technique, and use of forms. Class Experience - This is a judgment according to how often the student is in the classroom. Overall Performance - Instructor’s discretion will be used to make an assessment. Overall Attitude - The student should carry a positive attitude towards learning, exercising, and bettering themselves in all areas.
Criteria in order: 1) The above criteria met. 2) Written Portion (English names of forms memorized, etc) 3) Pre-Test of material. 4) 1st Test at the school for family and friends to attend. This will cover ALL curriculum material. 5) 2nd Test with one of the Masters over current or all curriculum material. Sashes and certificates will be awarded at this time.
*All students going to black sash will be performing ALL material in front of a Master at the test
White to Yellow: Sparring Techniques 1-15, Four Doorway Collapse Continuously (4 Months)
Yellow to Blue: Shaolin Short Fist 1-15, Flying Tiger Comes Out of Its Cave (4 Months)
Blue to Green: Shaolin Short Fist 16-22, Great Roc Stretches Its Wings (4 Months)
Green to 3rd Brown: Shaolin Short Fist 23-30, Sparring Techniques 16-20, Fist of The Lo Han, Stick of The Northern Smelly Beggar (8 Months)
One of the following groups to 2nd Brown, 1st Brown, then to 1st Black. All ranks learn Three Measures Fist (8 Months for each)
1) White Crane Turns Its Wings, White Crane Unfolds Its Wings, White Crane Turns Its Foot, Night Battle 8 Directions Broadsword 2) Shaolin Bird Falls from Heaven, Shaolin Bird Spreads Its Feathers, Iron Ruler Fist (Sai Form), Four Openings Eight Directions Staff 3) Golden Steel Crouching Tiger Fist, Connecting Fist, Sea Dragon Cane |
